Independent Schools Admissions & Selection

Independent Schools Admissions & Selection - Many junior schools and even some senior schools admit pupils on a first-come-first-served basis, so early application is advised. School Search can help you with this.

Schools which are willing to consider offering your child a place may require your child to sit an entrance examination. This will test your child's knowledge and level of achievement in English and Mathematics. Older children may also be tested in Science and a foreign language.

Many independent senior schools set some form of entrance test. The difficulty of these tests and the standard required for admission vary and will be related to the type of school. Most urban day schools, for example, set their own entrance examinations (usually in January) and require a high standard of performance. This reflects the education they offer, making high demands of very able children.

Schools will also want to interview your child and will ask for a report from the Head of your child’s current school.
