The Role of League Tables
There are many types of independent school.  In the UK, the independent sector has been the custodian of traditional educational values and at the forefront of educational innovation.  If you choose an independent school you are investing in your child’s future and giving them the best possible start in life.

However, the choice is bewildering and any parent looking at the vast range of schools will find that every school claims to be the best for your child.  Fortunately, as a parent you have a range of sources of evidence to consult before embarking on your educational investment.  When considering your child’s future you should endeavour to consult as many sources as possible.  One of the accessible sources of evidence is found in League Table form.  These tables have been the subject of considerable debate and no small amount of controversy; some schools have boycotted the tables and just about all schools criticise them. School league tables to be scrapped

Traditional league tables are expected to be scrapped as the Scottish Executive unveiled plans for "radical" changes in schools.

Education Minister Peter Peacock said he wanted to give parents "more meaningful" information on their children's progress.

He also announced a series of steps to revamp the curriculum, including the replacement of the current system of tests for five to 14-year-olds.

School league tables scrapped
The controversial school performance tables are being scrapped in Northern Ireland.

Teachers' unions are pleased, but there has been criticism that the move ignores the views of the Northern Ireland Assembly education committee.

The so-called "school league tables" have caused controversy since the government started to publish them in 1993, and three quarters of the responses to a recent consultation paper favoured abolishing them.

Although they are not academic league tables, the Independent Schools Network Rankings are based on the thousands of ratings from users of the ISN. They should be considered by the reader as an indicator of popular standing within a holistic approach to school choice. The rankings should be considered in conjunction with reviews, league tables, governmental advice, school marketing information and the views of an experienced educational consultant, as well as the personal opinions of the reader.
