There are many different resources for finding the right tutor for your student. Of course, speaking to your student’s teacher for their suggestions will always be a good start. Asking around any community organizations or churches that you may be involved with may also turn up good results. Naturally, personal recommendations are a valuable way to locate tutors with a proven track record; ask other parents for their suggestions or experiences. It’s a vast, unregulated, hidden industry. Around a quarter of our children are tutored individually at some point in their school career. For some it’s essential as they are off school with a long-term health problem. Occasionally, families who are travelling for an extended period take a tutor with them to keep junior’s brain ticking over. Others need someone to maintain schoolwork during a difficult period – an exclusion or a family break-up. School-aged film stars have their own tutors who keep them up to speed in between takes. Tony Blair supplemented all his children’s state school education with a bit of home help. However, many parents in more ordinary circumstances feel that a bit of one-to-one coaching will work wonders for their child’s confidence – and it often does. For most, it’s a question of bolstering basic maths or English competence in year 6 or needing one-to-one help to shed light on a tricky GCSE topic. A dip in a grade on a school report? Still can’t understand punctuation? A dodgy exam result? Common Entrance looming and algebra or Latin still a mystery? Help! Find a tutor! But – who are these tutors who seem to be teaching everyone’s children and, more importantly, how does one find a good one? If you are looking for a private tutor in the UK, please contact us.
